Remote peoples in villages throughout Papua New Guinea (PNG) have a number of unique and challenging needs. One of those challenges is learning to read and write. When people are learning to read their language for the first time as adults, the basic literacy material available to them may be quite limited.

Why does it matter how well people can read? When remote believers in Papua New Guinea can read, they can access Bible study resources and a range of information on other topics like education, health and hygiene, community development and so much more.

New Tribes Mission Papua New Guinea (NTM PNG) has a vision to see remote churches of Papua New Guinea confidently stand upon God’s Word by equipping people to read and understand the Bible. MissionAssist wants to support and enable that vision with our library of Shell Books – we provide books as a resource which can be edited to replace the text with a translation in any other language inside the “shell” of formatting and illustrations.

The NTM PNG Church Development Resources team has linked up with MissionAssist’s Functional Literacy team, and you can be involved!

Existing volunteers

If you have already been trained as a volunteer contributor with NTM PNG, and you are fluent in English, you are welcome to join MissionAssist to continue supporting literacy development in PNG. You can become a member of the MissionAssist team and focus on either writing, checking, illustrating, translating, or Microsoft Word formatting. Don’t worry – there’s no need to be good at all of those skills because we work as a team and share the tasks out amongst our volunteers to make best use of each person’s strengths.
