Hands at Home, Hearts Worldwide

11 May 2026

Many Christians are exploring how they can serve God’s mission in the world today. Busy lives, caring responsibilities, health or location may make in-person mission or ministry a challenge. At the same time, there is a heartfelt desire to support Bible engagement and see God’s word accessible to more people, in more places, in ways that are easy to use and understand.

While mission continues to take many forms, including significant travel and time overseas for some people, there is a rise in serving remotely from home. More people are discovering something MissionAssist has been living out for many years – that practical service carried out from home can enable others to serve effectively and can have a significant role in world mission.

What does Scripture look like in a digital age?

In a digital landscape, Scripture is increasingly encountered through screens, shared files and online formats, alongside printed pages and spoken words. The nature of God’s word is unchanged, but the ways it is prepared, shared and used are evolving. Digital formats can support wider access, clearer language and easier distribution, especially where resources are limited.

In various contexts, MissionAssist and our partners are noticing fresh interest in reading, understanding and sharing the Bible. This brings encouragement, but it also raises practical challenges. Scripture cannot be widely shared unless it is accessible – linguistically, digitally and culturally. Literacy, clarity of language and suitable formats all matter if communities are to engage meaningfully with God’s word.

MissionAssist exists to support this kind of opportunity. Through Bible digitisation, EasyEnglish Scripture, literacy booklets and other mission support services, Christian volunteering supports God’s word reaching more people, for the sake of the gospel.

What does digital mission look like in practice?

Digital mission does not usually feel dramatic. It often happens quietly, at home, using ordinary skills and equipment. For many MissionAssist volunteers, this includes keyboarding printed texts for digital distribution, formatting documents for publication, contributing illustrations, or hosting conversation sessions to help mission workers who want to improve their spoken English.

Each digital mission task may seem small by itself, but everyone’s contribution adds up to have far-reaching impact. Faithful, careful activities carried out from a desk or kitchen table can enable Scripture to travel far beyond that home, supporting local churches and mission partners around the world.

Serving world mission from home through digital service

MissionAssist was founded on the conviction that volunteers can serve world mission from home in practical, effective ways. This approach allows many more people to take part and enables mission partners to receive tailored, skilled support that strengthens their hands and hearts.

Through a process of welcoming and conversation, MissionAssist seeks to match people’s availability, skills and circumstances with opportunities to serve, recognising that God gives many kinds of talents, experiences and circumstances.

“God helps each of us with a gift from his Spirit. He does that so that we can help other people.”1 Corinthians 12:7, EasyEnglish Bible

Reflecting together as a community

These themes are very much part of MissionAssist’s shared life at present. As we gather for our annual conference this month under the theme “Hands at Home, Hearts Worldwide”, more than 90 MissionAssist members and our invited speakers are reflecting together on how home-based service and support for Scripture accessibility and engagement continues to shape our calling.

It is about recognising the value of service that MissionAssist has supported for many years, seeing how God is sustaining it today and staying attentive to how He may be inviting people to take part in the future.

We are grateful for the many ways Christians around the world continue to serve and support this ministry. We are also encouraged by growing interest in virtual volunteering for digital mission – serving world mission from home.

“Serving world mission does not rely on travel, but on availability to God’s calling.”Sarah McQuay, CEO, MissionAssist
